My son

Sep. 26th, 2006 | 09:39 pm

My oldest son, who is 13, has been profoundly deaf since the age of 13 months. It was caused by very high fever (106 degrees) I've always felt very blessed that all the fever did was affect his hearing, not his brain or intelligence. He has had no difficulty understanding speech with his hearing aids-a fact that has continually stumped his audiologist & speech teachers. With his level of hearing loss, he should have a lot of trouble understanding people speaking.
But now, it may have changed. He had a hearing test last week & all but 2 levels of his hearing has stayed the same. However, the 2 levels of his hearing have changed significantly & they are the levels of human speech. He doesn't have a cold & there is no signs of fluid in his ears.
So, we get to retest his hearing in 3 months & see if there is a change. A change for the better or if it's stable, we're OK. If it has dropped further, he needs to see his ENT (ear, nose, & throat doctor) to see why. It is different from the elderly, who have hearing loss as they age. Kids & teenagers don't lose more hearing as they age, even during growth spurts.
So, we have a rough 3 months ahead. Just lots of time on our knees, praying.

Holy Turkeys!

Sep. 14th, 2006 | 06:44 pm
mood: intimidated intimidated

Just sitting here in my living room, looking out into my backyard.

THERE ARE OVER 30 WILD TURKEYS IN MY BACKYARD, & I DON'T MEAN THE BOTTLED KIND!!

Now, it's true that I've put out corn to feed the deer in the woods behind my house (& there are 7 of them right now, too), but where did all these turkeys come from?!?! And no wonder they are so hungry-every turkey in the county must be here!

Well, the kids are impressed so I guess they can stay-as if I had it in my power to get rid of over 30 turkeys. If they band together, I think they could whip me!

Everyone, wish me the best. I listen to the Bob & Tom Show on the radio & I've listened to their animal conspiracy theory. I always thought it was just a comedy routine.

But now, I'm not so sure.......................

Bugs!

Sep. 13th, 2006 | 11:40 am

My oldest son, Dustin, who's 13, was assigned a project for his middle school science class-collect, correctly identify, & display 20 bugs from at least 5 different orders.
Yeeek!
Only bright spot was that I learned spiders ARE NOT insects-they are their own separate species. Thank God! I HATE spiders!
Dustin has really taken to this, though. The project is due in 6 days & he plans on continuing his collection afterward.
Guess if a kid has to have a hobby, at least it's something where he learns something. :0)
Dustin even found one bug we couldn't identify. He had me take it to the local university, & showed it to an entomology professor. He was excited! (Over bugs?) It was a Mexican burying beetle-not supposed to be here!
Anywho, as long as the bugs do not get loose in MY house, I guess I can live with it!
